Spiced Metheglin Recipes
Metheglin is mead brewed with herbs and spices. The name comes from the Welsh word "meddyglyn" meaning healing liquor — historically, metheglins were medicinal tonics.
Popular Spice Combinations
Holiday Metheglin
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 whole cloves
- 1 vanilla bean (split)
- Pinch of nutmeg
Summer Refresher
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger (sliced)
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 2 cardamom pods
Floral Metheglin
- 1 tablespoon dried lavender
- 1 tablespoon chamomile flowers
- 1 teaspoon dried rose petals
When to Add Spices
Add spices during secondary fermentation for more control over flavor intensity. Taste every 3-5 days and rack off the spices when the desired flavor is reached.
Tips for Success
- Less is more — You can always add more spice, but you can't take it away
- Fresh vs dried — Fresh herbs give brighter flavors; dried are more concentrated
- Whole spices — Always use whole spices, never ground (easier to remove, cleaner flavor)
- Pair with honey — Lavender honey + lavender spices = extraordinary. Orange blossom + cinnamon is classic.
